The Curved Road

MY WORK LIFE:

Senior Quality Software Engineer

foundation interest 1 interest 2

My work allows me to combine the foundation of LEARNING AND BEING CHALLENGED and the interests of TECHNOLOGY and ENGINEERING.

DAY IN AND DAY OUT

Work across multiple groups to align on and execute to common goals and metrics. Design and execute test systems and code. Ask probing questions that lead to more collaboration, better understanding across teams, and a better product. Report progress and future scenarios in a meaningful way to varied audiences with differing needs and goals.

SKILLS, TRAINING, OR EXPERIENCE NEEDED

Influence without authority. Build relationships with diverse people and teams. Integrate multiple team goals and metrics without sacrificing my personal and team goals. Fail fast. Be willing to fail. Speak up at the right times and in the right way. Lean towards actions when speaking up.

SOME HELPFUL FIRST STEPS FOR SOMEONE IN HIGH SCHOOL

Be curious. Try lots of things. Learn how to do things that are outside your comfort zone. Embrace failure and use it to learn about yourself and what you love to do. Find your passion - the things that are common across your favorite activities such as "learning emerging tech and teaching it to others", "feeling I contributed to making the world better in some small way", or "meeting with people 1:1 and developing relationships with them."

HURDLES I OVERCAME

THE “NOISE” FROM MY PEERS

“You're too negative.”

HOW I OVERCAME THE “NOISE”

Embrace it, that's a negative spin on what can be a positive trait. I can look at a situation and think through the things that can go wrong - in the right environment that's a very valuable skill. I also learned when and how to vocalize those thoughts, saving them for the right situations and phrasing them as actionable items with value.
